I spent the last three days at IDE 2019 – a summer school organized by Core-Lab of the University of Salento. For me, it was an opportunity to connect between commercial PLM, engineering, manufacturing software experience and researchers and academics working on diverse problems of digital enterprise such as machine learning, lifecycle, and many others, 130 people, 3 days sessions and keynotes and Southern Italian experience.

CORE Lab and University of Salento

The organization behind the event is CORE Lab University of Salento. Check for CORE Lab projects here. Special thank you to Professor Angelo Corallo and Mariangela Lazoi for organization and invitations.

Before IDE 2019, I had a chance to meet width CORE Lab and had long conversation about current PLM trends, collaboration, supply chain and digital transformation. As part of the visit, I met with EKA (Engineering Knowledge Academy), University of Salento and Core Lab spin-off focusing on PLM services and development.

Event, presentation and venue

The event took place in Riva Marina Resort with a beautiful view and tastes Puglia and a short walk from the nature reserve and marine protected area of Torre Guaceto.

The event was a mix of three tracks with keynotes, research and industry presentations including students posters.

My focus was on Lifecycle Industry At Large. The chairman of Lifecycle track, Professor Sergio Terzi from Politecnico di Milano created a great blend of industry and research presentation. Few pictures I captured.

The information about my presentation is available here – Manufacturing Web for the Future of Product Lifecycle. Few interesting questions I captured during Q&A session was related to cloud technologies, databases, security, and integrations.

People and atmosphere

The event is relaxing and provide a great deal of opportunity to connect and talk to people. For me, this is one of the greatest values of a conference.

At the end of the day, you can see presentations on the internet, but conversations are really valuable.

And conversations were going long into an evening time…

Outside of the event, you can find beautiful places.

And Food…

I’d say the food is really a dangerous thing in Italy. The gastronomic experience is fascinating.  So, you should be very careful.

And to check more about gastronomic places, check Tonight I bring you for dinner. My favorite story so far – In love with Gargano.

What is my conclusion? We should look outside of the box. While many people are associating PLM with complex enterprises, you can see researches looking at how to apply lifecycle principles in a variety of industries – from fashion, construction and entertainment. It was an amazing experience – a special thank you for Professor Angelo Corallo and Mariangela Lazoi of Core-Lab.

I certainly will be looking for an opportunity to keep in touch and recommend Core Lab as an interesting place to innovate and explore digital transformation opportunities. Just my thoughts…

Best, Oleg
